Calling all patriots and quilters!

This blog is in honor of our father who served in the Korean War. Although he doesn't talk much about the experience, sometimes he does talk about lessons learned and oddities. I want other people to know his story, and I want to know the stories of others.

I also wanted a way to combine my love for quilting and my love for my country. This led me to the idea of "In Your Honor" quilts. These quilts are given to wounded U.S. soldiers to show our love and support. I'm happy to make these quilts for such a noble cause, but I need your help.

I'm asking for patriotic fabrics, t-shirts, or other materials that can be used to make these quilts. If you make a donation in honor of someone touched by war, send their story along with the fabric and it will be posted to this blog. It is my hope that this blog will serve as inspiration and encouragement for others.

Fabrics should be red, white, blue, or a patriotic theme. I will also post pictures of the quilts that are made. Materials can be sent to Polly Mann at 8800 Dawson Hill Road, Louisville, KY 40299. In case there are quilters who desire to make their own patriotic quilts, I will post the sites where they may be sent. These quilts must meet certain requirements so please be sure to keep them in mind when designing your quilt.

Please - tell us your story.

Uncle Harry's Patriotic Heirloom Quilt

To honor my husband's uncle, we decided to make a photo quilt. His daughter snuck the pictures out for us to scan and print while her parents were out of town. I used 20+ photos and a variety of patriotic fabrics. We presented it to him at a family party in August. He had a great emotional, surprised reaction and was wonderful!

I chose lots of colorful patriotic fabrics for this quilt. Next time, I think I will use more muted patterns in order to draw more attention to the photos.
